Probably just like you, I've been either a marketer or an entrepreneur since I was a kid. But 14 years ago, I became obsessed with pricing strategy. Why? Because I tested a small price change on a newsletter I was publishing - and ended up with 45% more cash in my pocket. Not 45% more revenue, but 45% more PROFIT. Money I could KEEP! I had launched a B-to-B newsletter and was charging $97 a year for it. Then I decided to test a "crazy" price, which probably nobody would pay, of $127. That's an increase of 31%, so I figured I might lose 31% of the subscribers who received this offer.But that didn't happen. Instead I got 11% MORE SUBSCRIBERS when I asked for $127 than I did asking for $97. So, a 31% higher price and 11% more subscribers equaled 45% more cash to me. This so startled me that I wanted to learn MORE about how to raise prices - and get MORE buyers! So... I started: Testing: I've since become the price testing guru for the newsletter industry, and have conducted even more for my own two companies and for my consulting clients. Studying: Wanting to learn even more, I went back to college for my marketing doctorate. My dissertation (completed in January 2007) was on new product pricing. Getting my doctorate allowed me (in fact, REQUIRED me!) to read all the pricing research that's been conducted and published in the last 15-20 years.
